Tucked away at the end of a road in Karen, near the Karen Blixen Museum, is the Oloolua Nature Trail. I was searching for waterfalls in Kenya and this one kept popping up as one of the best. It also happened to be a 5-7 minute drive from where I was staying.

When you are paying and checking in, snap a quick picture of the trails-I still got lost and wandered a little, but at least it gives a little reference. The guards and rangers there are all very helpful and friendly. The trails remind me of ones in national parks here in the US-cleared dirt paths with rocks and roots along the way.

The area is clean and quiet and feels like you are miles from the hustle of the city. I chose to go left after entering and came to the waterfall first. I sat for a bit and let the sound of the water cascading down drown out the thoughts in my head. I was able to walk around and get to the top of the waterfall.

As I traveled on, I was looking for the bamboo garden, but seemed to miss it somewhere. I came upon the cave next. It’s not very deep, but the main chamber is fairly roomy-and it’s nice and cool inside. The walk meanders through the woods, open fields and along a road. Watch out for the monkeys and the school children that will want a picture with you!

Enjoy the peace and calm-go for a leisurely walk or take your morning run here. Take a picnic and spend several hours in nature.
