I decided to go to Nanyuki for a weekend from Nairobi, so I hired a car and plotted my route. Knowing that I would be going through Thika, I decided to knock out a couple of waterfalls along the way. This was my second time to drive in Kenya-it’s getting easier, still don’t like the speed bumps and when you are not familiar with the roads it can get confusing to find a one-way road with no signs telling you it’s a one-way! That said, the roads around the Blue Post Hotel got confusing!
In doing some research, I knew that the Blue Post Hotel was in the middle of the two falls. However, I did not know that you had to pay to get on the property to see the falls. There was also a “nature trail/animal park” of sorts with animals that you could pay to go through. Wanting the full experience, I paid for both.

Chania falls is the bigger of the two and was flowing heavy and fast. The water was muddy, but the sound of the rushing water seemed to soften the red color and put my mind in a different place.

I could have stood and watched this waterfall for the longest time. I was being lulled to a trance that called me to stay and engage.
The animal park was small, but offered quite a bit for the size. Half-way through, I was joined by an intern tour guide who proceeded to tell me all about the different species of animals there.
After trying to avoid the ostrich on the way in and the way out, I left the animal park and proceeded to Thika Falls with the guide. I think I would have missed this had he not been with me. It’s a little more hidden and there’s not a direct path to get there (or at least we didn’t take one).

The shrubs and trees have grown up enough that it is harder to see, but still beautiful in its own way.
After the tour, I retreated to the cafe and had an extra large mandazi, tea and a smoothie. This was a great stop for a relaxing morning. Would also be a nice 1/2 day trip out of Nairobi. Or make it a day and go to 14 Falls-I’ll have a post up on that shortly!
